Garden tasks for autumn. In the blink of an eye, summer is all over! Now we are faced with the colder, fresher months of autumn and it’s time to change things up in the garden! As the warmer days give way to rain and frost, it’s important we get into the garden and start to look at how we can refresh and prepare it for the changing seasons. Even though it may be harder to motivate ourselves to get out and about when the weather is less than favourable, just a few minor tasks may be all it takes to make a huge difference. We’ve put together a few of these essential garden tasks for autumn to help keep your garden gorgeous all year long!

Out with the old

Over the summer, our gardens thrive and are in full bloom. Our vegetable patches are brimming with delicious veggies and borders are filled with colourful flora. As the cold sets in these will die back, some waiting until the next summer rolls around, others for good. It’s important to identify which of your plants should be left alone and which you should start to weed out and dispose of. Getting rid of these in autumn and opting for more seasonal plants will ensure your garden stays fresh all year.

Forward plan for the summer months

Having a clearout will also allow you the opportunity to make space and give you the flexibility to change up the layout of your garden. With many of your plants dying back, you’ll be able to swap and change the layout of your garden without worrying about killing off any of your prized possessions.

Start adding a few more bird feeders to your garden

You may already have your favourite bird feeders out in your garden, but during the winter, offering a little extra food is a great idea. If you have a bird feeder already, why not invest in a new bird table or some of our delicious fat balls? Using a mix of different bird feed can also help to provide more variety and support to your garden birds, during the colder months.

Keep your pond free of debris

During autumn, the trees shed their leaves and even though your garden may look beautiful with all of its autumnal colours, it can be a chore keeping it clear. Ponds, in particular, can get clogged up and as they are often a good source of water for garden birds in autumn, you may want to keep it as clean as possible. To try and keep the bulk of debris out, try placing some netting over your pond before autumn hits. This means you’ll be fully prepared to catch any falling leaves when they start to shed. Even though the sun may not be shining and the temperature isn’t quite as friendly, there’s no reason why you can’t still enjoy the great outdoors in autumn and winter. Prepare as much as possible whilst the weather is still on your side and in a few months you’ll be able to simply sit back and enjoy your outdoor space.
