Why are dried mealworms good for birds?
Dried mealworms are the larvae stage of the Darkling Beetle and especially appeal to wild birds natural instincts. Packed with protein and fats they help your garden birds through the leanest, coldest months of the year. This is no mean feat. Small birds can lose between 10 -20% of their body weight overnight in the cold. To cope, they feed-up as much as they can in the hours before nightfall. Small garden birds, such as great tits, which feed on seeds and small insects, have to find food items at an average rate of one every ten seconds during daylight hours through the winter if they are to make it through to spring.
Studies by the RSPB (Royal Society for the Protection of Birds) seem to show that especially in towns and cities fat and protein rich food provided at bird-tables significantly increases the winter survival rate of several garden bird species. Mealworms are good all year round treat. Mealworms provide a good source of nutrition to nestlings. Many birds will feed their young seeds if there is no other option but a tasty, easy to swallow, nutrient packed mealworm is a much-preferred delicacy.
