The Great Autumn Migration - Where to Spot Majestic Migrating Birds in the UK

Autumn migration. Summer is coming to a close and many of our favourite feathered friends will be packing their bags and heading off to warmer climates for the winter. Bird migration can be a spectacular sight to behold; with flocks of swallows, yellow wagtails, swifts and many others flying south as soon as the temperature drops. These groups can often form beautiful formations as they fly. We take a look at some of the best places to spot these travellers as they make their way across the UK.

Portland Bill

Portland Bill is a small island based off the coast of Weymouth and is usually the last stop off point for birds migrating south to Africa or mainland Europe. The island is luscious and green and the perfect place for a winter walk. Its iconic lighthouse is also a great vantage point to look out onto the vast ocean, in order to spot some popular seabirds. You’ll also be able to spot some spoonbills, great skuas and sanderlings as they stop for a quick refuel before continuing on over the channel!

Isles of Scilly

The Isles of Scilly are a cluster of Cornish islands that offer stunning wildlife spotting. With turquoise blue waters and rolling green hills, the islands are a haven hidden on the UK’s southern coast. With its unique climate, the Isles of Scilly can attract some rare species that may have gotten a little off track whilst migrating. Make sure to head here around autumn for a truly amazing bird spotting experience.

Isle of Skye

A perfect example of some of Scotland’s most stunning landscape, the Isle of Skye is an amazing place for bird spotting. As one of the first places many species of bird will stop at, the Isle of Skye can see huge numbers of birds flocking to the coastline on their way down south. It’s best to head here during the early autumn, in order to catch the bulk of the migration.

Skomer

A wonderful place for puffin spotting, Skomer lies just off the coast of Pembrokeshire. Not only is it perfect for spotting seabirds, but you’ll also be able to watch as formations of migrating birds fly overhead as they make their way south. As part of the wildlife trust in south Wales, you’ll also have the chance to spot other forms of wildlife, such as seals. So you’ll be able to get a full wildlife watching experience from your visit!

Poole Harbour

As the second biggest natural harbour in the world, you are sure to spot a number of different species on your visit. With varying terrains, you’ll not only have the chance to spot species such as black-tailed godwits, but also ospreys and avocets.
