How To Make Lard Cakes For Your Birds
Make your own lard cakes. Birds love fat balls and lard cakes this time of year. It’s the perfect treat to provide them with energy and warmth. Best of all, they don’t always have to be bought. If you have a spare 10 minutes, you can use all sorts of kitchen scraps such as porridge oats, grated cheese and peanuts. Just mix it up with some suet or lard and leave in the fridge for a couple of hours”. - Raisins
- Peanuts
- Suet/lard
- Grated Cheese
- Scissors
- String
- Mixing Bowl
- Yoghurt Pot or Paper cups
- A Plate
Important notes:
- If you are making them with children, then it is not suitable for those with nut allergies
- Only use suet and lard as turkey fat doesn’t set well
- Poke a small hole into the bottom of the yoghurt pot/ pots. Thread the string through and tie a knot on the inside of the paper cup. Like this:
2. Add all your ingredients (except the lard) together in a mixing bowl
3. Let approximately half a block of lard melt in a pan
4. Add the warm lard to the bowl and mix them together with your fingertips. Keep stirring with a spoon until the mixture absorbs and starts holding together well
5. Pack the pot with your warm fat mixture.
6. Place in the fridge overnight to set
7. Next morning cut and peel away the pot. You now have a wonderful lardy bird cake. Add a few twigs or cocktail sticks to give your bird a nice perch. Now all you have to do is hang it somewhere in your garden! Make sure you look at our vast array of quality bird feeders.
