Preparing Your Garden For Autumn

Preparing Your Garden For Autumn

As we approach autumn, we are set to see some new flying visitors in our gardens. However, due to migration patterns and colder weather setting in, don’t be worried if you start to see fewer and fewer birds in your garden. This blog is going to offer top tips for preparing your garden for autumn.

It is likely during the autumn months that birds can be found taking shelter from the harsher weather conditions and predators. With the change in weather, comes the change in lights and atmosphere in your garden. You’re not the only ones who sense this, birds do too! Autumn is an important month to take extra care in preparing your garden, offering a safe and fruitful environment for birds as the weather becomes colder.

What To Feed Birds In Autumn

When we approach autumn, the most popular question we get asked is what to feed birds during these months. As the weather starts to get colder in these months and natural food sources start to deplete, autumn is arguably the most important time to offer a high-energy, nutritious diet that will get your garden visitors prepared for the colder winter months to come.

Birds need foods that offer them lots of energy and fat content to ensure they can keep warm and aid survival during winter. Foods such as suet, mixed bird seed and meal worms are all great options for your bird feeder when you are preparing your garden for autumn.

How To Prepare Your Garden For Autumn

There are a number of top tips when it comes to preparing your garden for winter. Ensuring birds have a good food source and clean water is of course one of the key preparation tips year-round,  but what can we specifically do in the coming months to ensure wild birds are protected in our gardens?

Clean Nest Boxes

Wild birds need a place to shelter from predators and harsh weather conditions during autumn in Britain. Nest boxes are not only for nesting, and can be used outside of nesting season to offer safe, warm and clean shelter for birds to protect themselves and their young if necessary.

Feeder Locations

Locating food becomes more difficult as the colder weather sets in and birds’ natural food sources start to dwindle. It is really important that when preparing your garden for autumn, you place feeders in appropriate places.

The best place for your bird feeder is close to shelter yet offers birds a good view of their surroundings to spot any lurking predators.

Leaves

Leave the leaves! It’s really tempting to brush the fallen leaves away during autumn but, these can home a lot of birds’ natural food sources. Leaves on the ground act as a shelter for insects and bugs, although, not enough of a shelter to be protected by wild birds.

When birds visit your garden during the autumn months, they will often sift through the dried leaves that have fallen to find their favourite tasty treats! This is also the case for compost heaps stored in your garden too.

It’s important to acknowledge that birds’ behaviours change during autumn as they prepare for migration during winter, or prepare for staying in Britain during the sometimes bitter cold months. As their behaviour changes, your behaviour as a bird watcher should too! Preparing your garden to become a safe sanctuary for birds during this time will make your garden a popular destination among wild and garden birds!
